Ignite Apothecary Practitioner News, Virgie Ponce

Virgie Ponce, BSN Registered Nurse and Aromatherapist

The history of Essential Oils is quite fascinating!  Through ancient texts, and historical and archaeological evidence, (Chinese manuscripts, Greek physician records, Egyptian Hieroglyphs), and biblical references we see that essential oils have been a part of health and well-being in cultures for centuries. As early as 4500 BCE, daily life in Egypt included oils such as cinnamon, myrrh, sandalwood and frankincense. Around 3000 BCE, India developed the science of Ayurveda which relies heavily on essential oils for curative and medicinal purposes. Chinese scholars first recorded use of essential oils during the reign of Huan Ti, in 2697 and 2597 BCE.  The fabled “Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” is still a significant formulary today. Greek physician Hippocrates  (considered the father of modern medicine), fumigated the City of Athens with an aromatic oil, saving the city’s inhabitants from a devastating plague. The bible records the use of essential oils both in the old and the new testament. Some of the very popular biblical essential oils are cedarwood, cinnamon, fir, frankincense, myrrh and spikenard (lavender).  The Magi brought oils as precious gifts to Jesus at His birth.

The Edna Valley Lavender Essential Oil Club officially starts January 27, 2017. We are excited to kick it off with our essential oil of the month, Organic Patchouli.  For centuries, Patchouli oil has been used in traditional medicine in Malaysia, China and Japan. It is primarily indicated for skin conditions, and benefits in cases of dermatitis, eczema, acne, dry chapped skin, and other irritating conditions, along with dandruff and oily scalp conditions. It is a cell rejuvenator, and helps in healing wounds and reducing the appearance of scars. It is considered an excellent remedy for insect and snakebites. We are grateful to Ignite Yoga Studios for allowing us to offer our essential oils services, and look forward to sharing our passion and love for God’s wonderful healing agents with you all!
