My Massage Philosophy
What does massage do? There are studies that show correlation between massage and positive physiological reactions, such as increased endorphins, relaxation, reduced pain, but there is not definitive proof of why and how it works. Further, each therapist conceives of what they are doing a bit differently, some may break up scar tissue and adhesions (knots) while others send healing energy to the person. Some may think massage increases blood and lymph flow while other that it reduces inflammation. Perhaps it does, and is, all of these things.
This is my own personal way of thinking:
My main job as a massage therapist is to pay attention to the body and hold space for the body to heal itself. I just notice, oh, this muscle is tight, here are adhesions, and I help my client’s brain to notice too. I may imagine that I break up adhesions and encourage the fascia to get juicer and to unstick, incorporating both pressure and energy, but really, it’s the client’s own body that does the work. When my client is on the table, the parasympathetic nervous system is active (the client is relaxed) and this is when the body, feeling safe, can take the time to heal. I help my client’s brain notice something that needs to change and then the amazing body can activate the physiological processes to best accomplish that change!
