If you live in Phoenix, AZ during the summer months, you know that hydration is important and drinking water imperative, but I would also like to introduce you to infusions as a powerful way to hydrate. Infusions are super teas. To make an infusion, you use dried herbs, pour boiling water over them, and then let them infuse for about 4-6 hours. A common ratio is 1 ounce dry herbs in 1 quart of water. You can do some research and find which herbs would benefit you the most. Personally, I alternate between dandelion leaf to support my liver, oatstraw for serenity, red raspberry leaf for hormones balance, and stinging nettles because they are amazing. They all taste differently; dandelion is bitter, oatstraw is mellow, red raspberry is delicious and nettles taste green.
According to herbalist Susun Weed, “A quart of nettle infusion contains more than 1000 milligrams of calcium, 15000 IU of vitamin A, 760 milligrams of vitamin K, 10% protein, and lavish amounts of most B vitamins” and selenium, sulphur, zinc, chromium, and boron (http://www.susunweed.com/herbal_ezine/October08/healingwise.htm). With so many nutrients, nettles are energizing, but it also helps normal sleep. Plus, it helps to calm allergies and boost the immune system. The zinc found in this infusion supports the immune system and helps to keep your body in balance, staving off anxiousness and worry. So perhaps try drinking some nutritious infusions for hydration and balance this summer.
